It is truly hard to decide which is better, THC vs CBD? As the Cannabis plant has many Cannabinoids, CBD and THC and many more, are some of them. Cannabinoids are the chemical compounds found in Trichomes, the sticky glands on the plant. They also are called exo- and phyto-cannabinoids. All the different chemical compounds have each their own special way of acting, many of them with medical benefits. As we all so well know, THC is a psychoactive compound which leads to the well-known “high” state.

THC vs CBD: What are the benefits and function of THC then?

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) dominates the chemical makeup of the plant and because of its psychoactive content, THC is often tried to be maximized in the plant. In the ECS, THC directly binds with both CB1 and CB2 receptors, while it has a higher affinity towards the CB1 receptor. With interaction with the ECS, THC has the following qualities:

  • Equally used for recreational and medicinal purposes
  • Provokes euphoria
  • Stimulates appetite
  • Prevents vomiting
  • Relaxes the body but at the same time induces a “high” feeling
  • Relieves pain

How does CBD work on the other hand?

Even though  Cannabidiol (CBD) binds with the CB1 and CB2 receptors, it rather acts as an indirect antagonist of cannabinoid agonists. It suppresses the CB1 and CB2 activating qualities of something like THC. It cancels the “high “out. It also interact with non- cannabinoid receptors.  In an overview, CBD is:

  • Non psychoactive
  • Used mainly for medicinal purposes
  • Brings homeostasis to cellular level
  • Suppresses appetite
  • Acts as an anticonvulsant
  • Reduces anxiety and a negative “high” experienced by THC
  • Ant depressive

Even though THC and CBD act differently, their differences are not the only thing to be focused on, together in synergy they are very powerful. THC locks onto the CB 1 and 2 receptors and stimulates appetite, concentration, pain relief and pleasure whereas CBD activates other receptors too. This regulates then the perception of pain,  reduces inflammation and counteracts the psychoactive results of THC. Together they work wonders as THC inhibits Tumor cell growth where CBD reliefs chronic pain. When using both together it is valuable to understand the different ratio’s and the effects there of. In conclusion follow a short summary of different ratio’s and the benefits they provide:

1:0 – Produces very high psychoactive effects that uplift emotions and lead to pure joy. Novice users can have strong side effects

2:1 - Brings euphoria but thoughts are calmer. Side effects are milder.

1:1 - Excellent for medicinal purposes with very little side effects if any

1:2 - Mild sedation with body relaxation is experienced. A weak euphoria will be present.

0:2 - It produces no high as there is no anti-psychotic agents present. Very good for therapeutic use.
