When your heart beats in your chest, your blood gets moved through your veins taking energy and oxygen to every part of your body. When your blood pressure is normal, you have nothing to be concerned about. Unfortunately, a vast number of people suffer from high blood pressure today.
Marijuana – could it be an alternative treatment to deal with this dilemma?
What is High Blood Pressure?
High Blood Pressure, or hypertension, is a serious condition that leads to strokes, heart attacks, and other problems. With hypertension, the blood pressure in the arteries gets too high. In normal blood pressure, the pressure gets measured by how much blood your heart pumps and the resistance in the arteries. The narrower the arteries get, the higher the blood pressure rises.
Hypertension – What are the Symptoms?
Hypertension is not for no apparent reason called the silent killer. Often people suffer from high blood pressure without even knowing it. Undetected high blood pressure can lead to the following:
- Heart attack
- Chronic kidney disease
- Eye damage
- Cognitive changes
- Heart failure
- Peripheral artery disease
What does science say?
Frequent cannabis users do not think of risks when they smoke or use it? Because marijuana can relieve stress, many also think it could lower blood pressure. There is a general agreement amongst researches that regular cannabis consumers have a slightly elevated blood pressure shortly after consumption. It changes then within a matter of minutes to a gradual lowering of blood pressure.
Certain studies also claim that marijuana users have a threefold risk of dying of hypertension in comparison to non-users.
The study also says it refers to anyone who has ever tried cannabis. It was an observational study though and other research speaks of the contrary.
The Mayo clinic says marijuana can decrease blood pressure rather than increase it.
Marijuana and Blood Pressure- How can it help?
Marijuana acts as an anti-inflammatory. There are two major components at play- THC and CBD. Your body has an endocannabinoid system with neurotransmitters where bio-chemicals interact on the immune system. It also controls emotional functions.
Marijuana cannabinoids mimic’s the body’s endocannabinoids where it reduces stress and acts as an anti-inflammatory. This plays an important role especially with regards to the pressured artery walls.
Symptoms that Marijuana can treat
- A headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
Marijuana and Blood Pressure – Is it good for you?
As with any medical condition, a visit to your medical doctor would be best. We have a complex biological system that reacts differently with every individual. When you are diagnosed with hypertension, speak to a doctor that has is experience in cannabis.
There are still limited studies on how effective Cannabis is on treating hypertension. Studies show very promising results, but there is no clear-cut outcome yet. It is advisable to do your own research first, and when it comes to your health, play it rather safe.
