Cannabis and Bone Health
Cannabis and Bone Health

Recent research shows promising results when it comes to Cannabis and Bone Health. The cannabinoids THC, CBD, and CBG can speed up bone healing and slow down bone degeneration. It also prevents bone disease.

Earlier research

In earlier research, there was a doubt that heavy cannabis users benefitted from smoking weed. In a study at the University of Edinburgh, researches found that the impact of Cannabis on Bone Health varies dramatically. Cannabis and Bone Health did not look good for young people as it reduced bone strength. For older people, it showed protecting against osteoporosis.

Studies showed that the compounds activating the CB1 receptors decreased bone loss in older mice and prevented the accumulation of fat in the bones, which is what happens to humans with osteoporosis.

The Endocannabinoid system plays a vital role in preserving, growing and strengthening bones. It interacts with other biochemical systems in the body, such as the immune system. CB1 and CB2 receptors are also active against bone diseases.

Cannabis and bone health – Lab Evidence

Over the past years, more research has been inducted to see how Cannabis and Bone Health plays out. It is discovered that cannabinoids can benefit arthritis, bone health, especially against bone diseases, injuries, and related pain.

In 2015, the research found that the cannabinoid receptors can strengthen the tissues connecting the broken bones and also trigger bone formation.

In a study with rats with broken bones, when given CBD or a combination of CBD and THC, the bones healed faster and had a strengthened fracture callus. This confirmed other indications that the endocannabinoid system facilitates bone metabolism and subsequently replace old material with new bone tissue.

The Cannabinoid system appears to regulate how much old bone material is broken down and how much fat is stored inside the bones. It also determines how much new cells are allowed to be born.

In another study in 2009, a connection was found between bone density and CB2 receptors in mice. This indicates that one of the roles of CB2 receptors is to balance bone metabolism that leads to slowing down age-related bone decay.

Managing pain with cannabis

THC and CBD are known for managing pain. When it comes to bone diseases, it is just as effective.

Arthritis

Cannabis and Bone Health

Arthritis is a disorder that affects the joints with stiffness, swelling, mobility reduction, and pain. At the moment there is no cure for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease coming with age. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder. Both diseases come with a lot of pain. Constant painkillers need to be taken that can lead to harmful side effects. Cannabis-based products can now be used as it reduces pain and inflammation.

Studies show promising results and CBD is considered as a specific anti-arthritic substance.

Afterthoughts

As with so many diseases, loads of research still needs to be done to fully understand the full impact of Cannabis and Bone Health.

It is true that cannabis reduces pain and inflammation of arthritis and related illnesses. But is also wise to take note that in a recent study in the American Journal of Medicine, it is found that heavy cannabis users are prone to broken bones and lower body weight.

As mentioned so many times before, the complexity of Cannabis on overall body health is in need of much more research.
